I know - what I mean is that with the damage cap - you can do like 30 damage
with the naval ring, you can do 60 damage - not nearly enough...
Well, with sauceror spells you can perm intrinsic spiciness and immaculate seasoning and with pastamancers you can perm flavor of magic, all of which increase spell damage.  And its not as if there aren't enough +spell damage items out there (spellbooks, accessories, utensils, staves) to boost it even further.

The trick with spell slinging is to take advantage of elemental weaknesses your opponent might have - instantly turn that 60 damage into 120 :)

120 isn't enough for me and there's still the problem of many monsters not having an element.

120 isn't enough for me and there's still the problem of many monsters not having an element.
Lets see...Level 5 quest is partially sleazy, level 6 is hot, level 7 is spooky, level 8 is mostly cold, level 9 you use the dictionary for, level 10 is unaligned with a few exceptions, hole in the sky is sleazy, level 11 has a combination of physical resistance, spooky and unaligned, with a few exceptions, level 12 is either sleazy or stench depending on your choice of side to support, with side quests covering all the elements (ducks), stench (larva).

So, basically, the fantasy airship and castle in the sky are your only real choke points in spell-slinging.  And the airship HP ranges are 100-127 so with a half-way decent set of spell accessories you'll be two-shotting them with your best spell.

Its worth remebering, also, that sauceror spells can do double damage to any elemental type except hot.

lol...120 seems like a descent chunk of damage, most monsters would be toast after two at most three attacks, no?
Sometimes, it helps to just let your dilemmas or tough descisions go away. Kind of like the line-item veto.

Out of interest, has anyone picked up this months item (the Green Ghost)?  Is it any good or merely a poor adventurers hobo?

It is functionally identical, but occasionally after combat it will eat food items that a monster dropped preventing you from picking them up.

I'm assuming this is because it is easier to get food early on

Two things really...

Firstly, a bump for this thread which was languishing somewhere on page 3...

Secondly, has anyone tested to see if the Vivala Mask gives a damage boost to the new party favors?  I would test it, but am languishing in hardcore at the moment.

I presume views on the party favors are generally positive but the implementation of it, if you also have a libram of candy heart summoning, is somewhat annoying (especially as they are no longer listed on the quick skills list)?

down with the bookshelves! seriously, they are terrible ideas. i mean jick and co.'s reasoning was that newer players wouldn't be missing out on as much as they would without the bookshelves... but the total nerf screws over (and will screw over even more people as the new tome comes out) everyone who got the first libram. i smell a huge drop in the price of tomes coming, so if you've got a spare, sell it now or regret not doing it.

I don't think the situation is quite as dire as all that - and I can't see tome prices dropping because of this change - you trying to pick one up on the cheap?

Personally i would like to see two changes:

1) Add the librams/tomes/grimoires back to the quick skills list.  Seriously.

2) Change the MP scaling for the librams so that they scale independently as in if you summon a candy heart, half of the MP increase is passed on to the next summoning of a party favor (or three-quarters or whatever).  I think that would not be tremendously unbalancing and give those with both librams a chance to use them on a regular basis (especially in the early stages of hardcore)
