Because we stole the GUI before Microsoft did!  ;)

I just got a MacBook pro and it's my first encounter with MacOS so I wanted to ask - does anyone know good applications I should look into? Any must-haves for Mac users?

Firefox. :)

I don't use them that much. Not a lot of my customers have them so I don't feel the need to tinker with the Mac's I have all that much.

I am almost exclusively a Mac user (actually, Apple systems in general, as I had an Apple ][e growing up*), so my first question to you would be:  What type of applications?

In general:
-Web browsing:  Safari is fine, but I find it slow.  I usually use Camino (a Mozilla offshoot) as it is much faster.  Plenty of people like Firefox, although I've personally never been a fan.

-Office products:  I generally end up using MS Office, just because it's become the de facto standard.  I've been using Keynote (part of iWork) for presentations instead of Powerpoint, though.  I like the presenter features it offers (seeing slides in advance on the monitor with notes, etc.).  Also keep in mind that you can save files as PDFs natively, without having to invest in external PDF software.

-Compatibility:  Boot Camp is built into the system these days if you want to boot into Windows (which is what I did when I wanted to play Portal).  For virtualization, I use Parallels so that I can run the Windows-only scientific applications we have in lab.  It runs concurrent with OS X, and integrates itself quite well.  Crossover (based on WINE, so you don't have to boot Windows at all) is getting better, but still slow for a lot of applications.

-Other:  Photoshop is pretty ubiquitous these days.  What else can I say about that?  :)  Things like VLC and Mplayer are also available should the native Quicktime not meet your video-viewing needs.  Also, KoL Mafia, but that's a necessary app...

A good resource for application ideas is Versiontracker ( http://www.versiontracker.com/ ).  Browse the categories to get a sense of what's out there.  If you have specific application needs, I can probably point you in the right direction.

The MacBook Pro is a mighty beast (that's the portable I have), so you should enjoy it.

* I have, over the years, owned an SE/30, an LC, a 6115, two UMAX SuperMac clones (the C600 and the S900), a PowerBook G3, and a G4 MDD tower--frequently modified and upgraded in strange power-tool requiring ways; also, I worked with a host of other models while a computer lab consultant in college.

I installed vista for my gaming and windows needs ( Microsoft took down 32 bit Windows XP from msdnaa a week before, I should have grabbed it while it was there heh), Firefox wast the first app I installed under Leopard :)

I'm mostly looking for some free apps that make life and work easier, I downloaded Quicksilver since I use something like that under Windows, and Unarchiver or something like that for extracking archives, and I'm wondering if there are any other simillary usefull apps.

(All Free Applications)

Cyberduck for FTP

Mafia for KOL

Flickr Uploader to upload and tag photos to Flickr

NeoOffice - best Office Program around for Mac and is 100% Compatible with those dirty Microsoft files.

Adium for Chatting - the latest version allows chat (but no video) on just about any protocol possible

iTerm if you do anything via the Terminal, or do a lot of system administration

KeePassX for Password/user name tracking

Measuring Cup for Recipes - includes import and export features

Smultron - Simple Text Editor

TacoHTML - Awesome HTML Editor

DOSBox - Dos Emulator

FreeCol - Sid Meier's Colonization ported natively to OSX

Thanks Ace, I need to get me some of those :)

Are there any ntfs drivers for Leopard? Since I have a windows partition on the same disk it would be nice to be able to read files from one system in the other, I know it's possible under many Linux distributions, so mayby there is something like this for MacOS? Even read only would be nice.

There is also the mount_ntfs command but that is still considered experimental.

What I've done is setup those servers as SMB shares and then exported them to the OSX boxes. If you have a hetrogenus mix of machines you might want to do that to a Unix server of some sort then have the server export NFS shares as they're a bit more robust then SMB.

Safari 4, Beta is turning out to be a great browser. I've completely gone away from FireFox back to Safari. It has yet to crash on me, runs fast and has no issues with multiple tabs.

I wrote a little review of it some time ago: http://1nova.com/blog/?p=483 but find that I love it even more now.

Starting from yesterday Safari 4 is out of Beta ;)
There's an official release for both OsX and Win.

A great browser indeed and is lightspeed fast!

Now let's wait september for Leopard Snow (29$ upgrade for leopard users!!!)

Looking forward to Snow Leopard. It's got a lot of good options, especially for corporate users.

If I may bring a bit of humour to this geeky part of the forum:
Nice review, Ace!

But I laughed my entire backside seeing the AdSense on top of the page:
