A Basement Guide
« on: February 11, 2008, 08:32:45 PM »
Hey guys, just here to help you decide how you want to tackle the Basement. I might even be wrong on some of this, but I hope not. Cav and the few other Basementers around will also be able to help you.

Monsters

The Beast with n Ears

The Beast with n Eyes

A n Stone Golem - Has some physical resistance

A n-Headed Hydra - Can do hot, cold, and stench damage

The Ghost of Fernswarthy's n great-grandfather - Just use a scroll of ancient forbidden unspeakable evil

n Bottles of Beer on a Golem - Use entangling noodles or other stunning object, as he has an extremely high block rate. Spectral Snapper isn't blocked.

A n-Dimensional Horror - Blocks a high percentage of physical damage. Use uncapped spells.

Monster Level Formula

Quote
ML = 2 × basementlevel^(1.4)

Stat Tests

Formula for the required skill to pass:

Quote
Stat = basementlevel^(1.4) + 2

Muscle Tests

Do away with the 'doo

Moxie Tests

MP Test
A Festering Powder - See Maximizing Your Mysticality/MP

Formula:

Quote
Drain = 1.67 × basementlevel^(1.4)

HP Test
Throwin' Down the Gauntlet - Maximize your damage absorption. This is where Tao of the Terrapin (doubles the power of your hat and pants, which are used to calculate Damage Absorption) really does its magic. Also, see Maximizing Your Muscle/HP

Formula:

Quote
Phys = 10 × basementlevel^(1.4)

Elemental Test

Elemental Test             Elements                Optimal Elemental Form

Singled Out                 cold and sleaze          Coldform (phial of coldness)

Costs

While there is no defined cost to getting to BL 500, our good friend bigquack came up with a good theory.

Without time and skills, you'll need meat, without time and meat, you'll need skills, and without meat and skills, you'll need time.  Easy!

Brimstone vs. Plexiglass, and a general Basement Discussion

Shamelessly taken from the wiki...

Quote
Another question of interest concerns the expected buff costs for the various potions required for a successful level 500 dive. It is possible to calculate a cost ceiling for a dive, by summing over the potion costs of sustaining the buffs listed in the number-crunching section. While it is not necessary to be fully buffed all the time, the equalizing potions, xform effects, and healing/effect removal costs do eat up some of the overestimate.

It'd be kinda neat to have this estimate, but as before, it's difficult to calculate. Reports vary from hundreds of thousands to a million Meat to reach BL 500 (therefore making the ceiling roughly 1 million Meat).

Why did you just copy this guide from the HCO forums, without giving any credit at all? You could've linked it and added some original viewpoints to it... or stuff from your experience.

* Club Sealer is a sad panda

(also, I might later write some notes about my (so far) two basement dives)

Edit: Sorry, looks like it wasn't just plain Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. Still, should've given credit >.>

Naughty naughty Achtung you plagiariser you!

I disagree somewhat with the skills list as it omits what I would consider two key skills for basement diving: Astral Shell and Elemental Saucesphere.

Given that a significant percentage of your encounters will be elemental tests, having these two skills along with the 5 passives gives you 3 levels of protection which should be enough to see you past level 100.  After that you are starting to look at equipment or potions to boost it further (Plexiglass ring being the equip of choice here unless you happen to have a heavy parrot sitting around - I would consider the elemental protection semi-rares a bit too pricey for everyday use, but then again I'm Scottish :D).

Also, if I remember correctly, the wiki buffs page is a little out of date now and doesn't include the additional mus/myst/mox bonus you get from drinking a hamethyst/Baconstone/Porquoise potion.

Costs

Without time and skills, you'll need meat, without time and meat, you'll need skills, and without meat and skills, you'll need time.  Easy!

In the above quote, by time I was referring to 'overlevelling' as in not starting to basement until you hit something around/above level 30.

no, i didn't just copy that guide. i used my own knowledge, and information from the wiki, with just a similar format. and i did give credit with the thing i took word for word. did i flat out plagiarize? no. did i take some information from that guide, other guides, and the wiki, and compile them? yes.

Edit: and i admit, i probably should have cited my sources, but that would mean taking the time i should have been using to write a speech to cite said sources. sorry.

sorry if you thought so, but i didn't just completely plagiarize it.

a few more helpful potions...

* oil of stability -- Base mysticality and base moxie essentially becomes the same as your base muscle. Any +% equipment/effects are calculated from that base.
* oil of expertise -- equalizes everything to Mysticality
* oil of slipperiness -- equalizes everything to Moxie
* Ferrigno's Elixir of Power -- +200% Muscle
* Hawking's Elixir of Brilliance -- +200% Mysticality
* Connery's Elixir of Audacity -- +200% Moxie
* potion of temporary gr8tness -- +100% to all stats
* tomato juice of powerful power -- +50% to all stats
* SPF 451 lip balm (hot resistance)
* bottle of antifreeze (cold resistance)
* black eyedrops (spooky resistance)
* Dogsgotnonoz pills (stench resistance)
* donkey flipbook (sleaze resistance)

Familiars

Sombrero, should be self-explanatory
Exotic Parrot, which helps maximize your Elemental Resistance without using up those oh-so-useful equipment spaces which you can now use to buff your HP.

The semi-rares are just too expensive to be relied on. With a phial running, it's much cheaper to concentrate on maximizing your HP, specially if you do so with a well-balanced outfit (equipment is for ever, potions are not.)

The equalizing oils are of utmost importance. They'll save you many of the better potions, so you can keep them for the lower levels.

A last note: percentage buffs are *usually* better than constant buffs, but not always. If you're not starting the dive at a high level you might want to do some basic math before choosing a +10% buff over a +30 buff, or +5% pants over a +7 one.

Clubby's basement guide in less than 100 words:

- be a Sauceror, never a moxie class
- use Mafia, buffbots
- your friends are: equalising and reagent potions, wads, roasted marshmallows, hardcore rewards, any other percentage buffs

- stat tests – just buff up, 6k+ stats needed by the end
- combats – divine favors, sombrero
- elemental tests – use right elemental form, maximum resistance and HP (no need for semirares)
- gauntlet – 200 power hat and pants, good shirt, Tao, DA buffs
- festering powder – Jumbo Dr. Lucifers or PYEC for MP
- always take main stat reward

Good luck!

As i've completed a couple of 500th level runs i thought i should add to this.

Level 30 is about the average level you should be looking at to be able to get to level 500. It does depend on class, skills and meat, and will probably be a bit more for newer players (though i would recommend they get a few ascensions under their belt before trying this), and less perhaps for older players, with a lot of meat to spend, but my two level 500 runs have finished as Level 32 Sauceror (i could have completed it quicker than that, but that was my first time in the basement), and level 30 Turtle Tamer.

The key for everything really is Reagent Potions, which is why Sauceror is a must for every players first run, as you can cook three Reagent Potions for the ingredients of one. That combined with the 80%/90% (can't remember which) max elemental resistance from the Sauceror class means you will find many things far easier. Reagent Potions can be used for stat boosts, for the elemental challenges (the phials, which also double up as a way to defeat the enemies with physical resistance). So if you are on a budget, go with Sauceror (or at least do a Sauceror lead in run, where you can prepare yourself plenty of potions for the basement). Elemental challenges don't need semi-rares, as you can boost up enough with items, so you can max out your HP with equipment instead.

For the combats, i'll repeat what everyone else has said, the divine combat items are brilliant. Combined with funkslinging, and you should not have a problem with anything in the basement if you are at a good level.

MP tests is where i had the most problems. People forget sometimes Jumbo Dr. Lucifers restore all MP (for 1 fullness), so are brilliant if you are on a budget to restore your MP. Don't think about going for MP boosting items though, it is (i think) better just to focus on Myst boosts. I don't see how anyone could try for the basement without Wisdom of the Elder Tortoises, given how frustrating (even as a sauceror) the MP tests are.

Finally, Roasted Marshmallows. These are something that need to be considered carefully. I think they may turn out to be very useful, if you use them right (remember the max percentage increase with them is 500%). Saving your fullness till the end of the day, then eating them, getting drunk, going past rollover, and eating 15 more gets you 90 turns of the effect (starting off at 450% boost), is the most efficient way of consuming them, but they are only (i would suggest) useful for late on, if you are trying at a lower level to get down to 500 (or even stacking the effect into a third day, getting it to 500%, and eating a marshmallow every 3 adventures to keep the strength of the effect while basementing works well, but is fairly costly, and is not that efficient with adventures).

Just a quick one from the forums of loathing, the minimum level you have to be (with all currently-known buffs) to reach level 500 (assuming a non-combat test at level 499) is level 22.

I would like to add equipment to that.  Also, this reminds me of a bernie mac episode, where they were doing construction.  Where was that theory taken from?

Clubby's basement guide in less than 100 words:

- always take main stat reward

The gains are scaled to your main stat... So sometimes you want to take muscle to survive the hp drainage/elemental tests if your main stat is really high, or if you hit level 30, which is going to be my strategy

So, I'm a level 30 DB with no permed HC skills.  I'm planning on getting down to level 500.  Any guides/suggestions?  I'm rather lost at the moment and have just been messing around, spending turns after buffing for hobo bosses.  I'm on level 121 right now.   The monsters are giving me the most trouble

Candy hearts for cheap buffs. I also tend to use divine party favors against the beasties. If you haven't looked at ready look at the basement guide on the wiki.
Use ! potion to buff up too.

Alright, so I've been looking at stuff again, and wondering what outfits are best for each monster/Gauntlet/MP test?

Right now I have full hodg outfit, without sock and all offhands except garbage sticker.  I also have el vibrato relics with the familiar.  I'm having trouble finding a good comparison on how these will fair, and what I should charge my el vibrato hat with

I used the dressing for success page on the wiki for mys/mox/mus - and basically equipped whatever the best equipment I had and buffed accordingly to clear that levels test.

best bet, use mafia and equip different outfits (id recommend saving each custom outfit - basement mox, basement muscle, etc). And try those out for the gauntlet/mp test ones so that way you'll see what is need in terms of potions/buffs/etc to clear the test.
